Calgary’s Ernest Barbaric on the “Ripple Effect” at #MRUShift

One of Calgary’s top digital marketing speakers, Ernest Barbaric – a trailblazer that is getting us to focus more on strategy over tactics will be hitting the stage this month at MRU Shift Social Media Shift.

Ernest was kind enough to answer a few questions about this presentation, and whe is seeing in the digital marketing training space.

What will you be presenting?

The Ripple Effect explores the decision making process and how it’s affected by social media. This is a look behind the scenes of how we make our purchasing decisions. Each status update, photo or tweet we see embeds itself in our long term memory and whether we realize it or not, each one of those influences our decision process.

Why is MRUShift an important conference for Calgary?

MRU Shift is a really exciting conference for Calgary! We have some fantastic speakers lined up, including the bestselling author of UnMarketing, Scott Stratten and the brains behind WestJet’s social media, for example. I believe the audience will walk away with great new insights and practical advice to make social media work for their business.

Where do you see training/eduction of digital marketing going in Calgary?

Calgary is starting to turn a corner when it comes to Digital Marketing. We’re past the “indoctrination” phase and moving swiftly into “strategy and application” phase. There are some talented people doing amazing work in our city and I believe our next frontier will be a focus on true strategy. So far, I’ve seen a lot of tactic-based seminars and I feel there is a need to move beyond that and figure out how to make it all work together.

What is the future of digital marketing for Calgary?

Future of digital marketing belongs to those ready to think beyond digital. Reality is that digital marketing is only a part of the marketing mix. Knowing your customers, understanding your brand, providing stellar service are all pillars of good business and that will never change. Integrating all the moving pieces into one “cohesive mess” is what sets trailblazers apart from the crowd. The new term to watch out for is “transmedia”, which is a true multi-platform integrated approach to marketing or story telling. To see an example of what this looks like… Check out this viral Dark Knight Video.

Why an iPad? Ernest Barbaric’s Story

Calgary’s Ernest Barbaric, a social media & digital marketing geek (Ernest called himself a geek!), was gracious enough to answer my 10 questions on ‘Why an iPad?‘. This post is #3 in this series.

Ernest is well know in Calgary’s social media industry. He is an accomplished and sought after social media speaker and consultant. Watch out for this savvy marketer, he’s a rising star.

1.       What do you use your iPad for?

It’s a mix of business and personal. Most of the time, I use it to read. iBooks, Kindle and Kobo for regular books and then Mashable and Pulse for reading various RSS streams. I stopped buying printed books and magazines mostly due to the iPad.

2.       How often do you use it?

Every day for at least a couple of hours.

3.       What kind of iPad did you purchase?

I wasn’t too sure about how it would plug into my work and life, so I got the basic 16G WiFi model

4.       What accessories do you have?

Just the Apple brand cover.

5.       Would you recommend an iPad? If so what type of a person would you recommend buy one?

It would depend on what you do. I would say that anyone who travels would definitely appreciate the battery life and convenience of an iPad.

6.       Do you also use a laptop, if so how do you use the laptop vs the iPad?

Yes. Laptop is my primary workhorse and I use it for pretty much everything from web design, to writing articles and watching movies. iPad on the other hand is more for quick and easy access to the internet or e-mail and of course for reading.

7.       What do you dislike about the iPad?

It would have been nice to have a USB port and functionality that supports it. Also note that the iPad isn’t really meant to be an input device.

8.       How do you see your use of the iPad evolving in the future?

Probably with different input devices and higher computing power, I can see a device like an iPad replacing computers over a course of few years. I see one device emerging that will combine the functionality of a cell phone with the processing power of a computer, all integrated with different and immediate inputs and outputs to provide us with true augmented reality.

9.       What are some apps you would recommend?

DropBox, Twitterrific, Popplet, PulseNews, Flipboard, Evernote and of course SpringPad

10.   What apps would you not recommend?

Penultimate, WheatherBug and most of the office type apps (QuickOffice, Docs to go), they’re just not quite up to par just yet.

Anything else you would like to mention?

I thought the iPad would replace my laptop at most meetings, but that wasn’t the case. I find that as time goes along, I’m using the iPad more for personal use then for business and I think this is due to getting the WiFi model. If you already have a data plan, I would recommend getting a 3G model and then setting up a shared data plan OR if you have an Android phone that can create a mobile hotspot, it would be more business friendly.

Thank you for sharing Ernest! Contact Ernest if you are looking for a social media speaker, he does travel everywhere and is very knowledgeable and great in front of an audience.

The Secrets Of Integrated Marketing Have Been Exposed, Calgary Marketing Meetup Event Summary

Marc Binkley (@marcbinkley on Twitter), an account executive for a local radio station cluster spoke passionately to 25+ plus people on the importance of an integrated marketing strategy at the Calgary Marketing Meetup luncheon on September 14, 2010.

Marc is an Account Manager for Rogers Broadcasting Limited. Marc says “Radio is a fantastic medium” and that the value of listing in the yellow pages is not there anymore.  The key to radio marketing is to build a trackable campaign, and then integrate it into platforms where customers can be engaged.

Marc likes to speak with customers about using a variety of marketing and advertising platforms to leverage and compliment each other. He feels strongly that is you are not online and actively communicating, business growth will be challenging.

When discussing social media specifically, he says “Social Media is like word of mouth on steroids”. He talks to customers about using radio, in conjunction with Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Marc agrees, social media can be confusing, but traditional media options can also be overwhelming.

Social media is changing advertising from simply an interruption – a one way channel, into a channel of communication, where customers actually interact with products and companies online.

It was a good event, thanks to Marc and the Calgary Marketing Meetup organizers for putting the event together!

Marc will be posting his presentation on his website.

Ernest Barbaric http://www.ErnestBarbaric.com will be leading the Calgary Marketing Meetup this year. He says “We’ll be gearing up for the October meetup in about a week. Right now, we’re thinking about having a branding roundtable, with experts from digital, print and pr world coming together to offer their opinion and experience to our audience.”

Calgary Marketing Meetup Summary – Oh My!

The Calgary Marketing Meetup Group, “MySpace, YouTube, Identica, Twitter, FriendFeed, Facebook and LinkedIn….. Oh my!”

One of the best attended Calgary Marketing Meetup Group events occurred on Tuesday, May 11th. Six panellists spoke to over 60 attendees, Conversation was spurred by reviewing Backbone’s “Technology Test” – an online multiple choice test that “will give you insight into the areas in which you are strong and those in which you could use some improvement. Consider it a health check: wire your company up to the virtual ECG and see how it performs”.

An attendee, who works in the automotive repair industry stated that due to the high level of competition in his industry, his company needs to respond very quickly to customer inquiries that come in online. Referring to an Inside Sales report, a customer is 100% more likely to use your services if contacted within 5 minutes of hitting your website.

The audience was mostly interested in the technicalities of online marketing. When the panel was asked about preferred web analytics tools Roger Kondrat of West17Media mentioned Crazy Egg and Clicktale, Yves Matson of Found Pages also stated that “there is hardly a drawback of installing Google Analytics”. Statcounter was also a suggested tool for those that prefer an “analytics for dummies” type tool. A key area to check in analytics is your exit pages. “Pay attention to them, unless it’s your contact page” Michael C. Breuer, Technical Director, Calin Daniel Creative.

Attendee Jackie Dumaine, with The Stillness Room endorsed Facebook Advertising, Facebook Analytics and the new Like page. “Facebook gives extreme demographic data, for $5 a day the advertising is amazing”.

What to watch out for? “Mobile Marketing is in it’s infancy” – stated Steve Joyce of Local Search Heros. And apparently “Flash intros are dead!” Ernest Barbaric , Digital and Social Media Marketing Trainer and Consultant “they stall the customer’s need to get what they want”.

Mail Chimp was also mentioned several times as a worthwhile email marketing tool and service that can help companies avoid getting slammed into the Spam garbage pail.

Attendees also wanted to know what your home page MUST have. “It must have a call to action”. Ernest passionately stated. What do you want your customer to do? Buy your book? Book a meeting? It sounds simple, but this call to action is often missed.

The event was so jam packed with meaty and technical information that there was not enough time to delve into how to use Photography and Video online to market your business. Although the topics were touched on, both panellists Brett Gilmour of Gilmour Photography and Tish Bell of BizBoxTV didn’t get the opportunity to share their experience and knowledge…

Overall a fabulous event and fabulous info from a power panel, and all for only $10.

Thank you to Sandra Schultz of Ad Spots who helped organize and emcee the event.

Calgary Marketing Blogs

In the search for marketing and social media knowledge, I have found some fabulous resources online; websites and blogs like Mashable (an app is available!), Twist Image, ReadWriteWeb and TechCrunch. These sites have more information than I can possibly take in on a daily basis, I do my best to absorb as much as I can, when I can.

But there is something about getting information from “locals”. I thoroughly enjoy and value information I get out of the local network I have access to (Calgary). There is something real and relate-able about local content creators.

Here is a short list of some local content creators that I learn from and enjoy. These publishers, and the above publishers create a lot of free, accessible and valuable content, soak it up if it floats your boat.
